4 Ways to Eat Steak - How Do You Take Yours?

Tuesday, January 11, 2011

OK now let us talk about this a little bit. We all know that there are four main ways for you to eat your steak and that's well done, medium-well, medium rare and rare.

There is no correct way to have it, and to each his own. However, I felt that there was a small need to talk about this because there is just one way that I would NEVER try.

Can you guess what way that is?

You probably can... But before we start the guessing game, let us talk about each preparation.

1. Well Done

This is when you ask the cook to make sure there is no blood showing in the meat.

Pro: There is no blood showing in the meat

Con: Many cooks don't know how to cook it without either burning it or drying it out so bad that you need a chisel to cut it. Then once it is cut it takes an hour for your teeth to break it down for digestion, and that's just the first piece.

2. Medium-Well

This is when people like to eat steak almost well done, but it has a little pinkness on the inside.

Pro: Nowhere near as tough as well done

Con: Some cooks can't tell the difference between medium well with some pink and well done without any pink and you end up with well done steak anyway.

3. Medium Rare

This steak is on the brink of not being done. It has a whole lot of redness on the inside and is browned on the outside.

Pro: You do not have to ever worry about this type of steak being overcooked.

Con: This steak is on the brink of not being done so it has way too much redness.

4. Rare

This is when people like to eat their steak with blood gushing out with a touch of brownness (yes I'm making up words) on the outside.

Pro: It's not 100% raw.

Con: It's not 100% cooked. It may be contaminated with Ecoli.

I know you have probably figured out what type of steak I would never eat.

But just in case...

...Drum roll please...

...Brrrrrrrrr (my drum roll effects)...

RARE!

I am sorry but there is no way I am eating anything that has blood dripping out of it. To tell you the truth, I can't even eat it medium rare. That is just too close to me killing the cow myself, chopping it up, putting it over some fire and watching the blood gush out. You might as well not put it on any fire at all.

I can't do it!

Truthfully, I just started having it medium well and that's only because too many people overcook the well done meat. I ask for well done and I get well burned.

If more people knew how to pre-treat the meat, then I would get nice, tender, well done steak. But they don't and so I don't. Therefore I now have to settle for seeing a little bit of pink in my meat.

And that's how I eat steak. How do you take yours?
