Cook Flank Steak - What is the Best Way to Cook Flank Steak?

Friday, September 30, 2011

This article goes into detail about what is flank steak and different possible ways of cooking it. Many people we have come across have asked where does this type of steak come from or what part of the cow does flank steak come from. It is a beef steak cut from the belly muscles of the steer, and is long and flat. It's best known application is London broil. Many food enthusiasts are asking us what is the best way to cook flank steak.

There are many opinions on this particular topic. It is significantly tougher than the loin and rib steaks, therefore many recipes use marinades or moist cooking methods such as braising. It is also used in barbecue cooking in slow and low smoking time and temperature. We recommend grilling, but you can also broil it. Another question that many people are asking is how long do I bake this type of steak? What it takes to cook is actually a pretty easy process. You need a slower longer cooking process than most other cuts or roasts. We recommend you use a temperature of 300 - 325 degrees and use a small amount of liquid in order to maintain a moist environment. It can take up to 1-3 hours of slow and low moist baking in order to achieve tenderness.

Another popular question that is being asked is how long do I broil this type of steak? We do not recommend broiling a flank, but if you do here are some things to remember. Make sure you marinade your steak for at least 8 hours and preferably overnight. You should broil your flank steak 7 minutes on each side for medium. Slice the steak thin against the grain for tenderness.

How Long Do You Grill Ham Steak?

Thursday, September 29, 2011

Ham Steak is one of the easiest steaks to grill. The reason for that is the ham is already cooked and all you need to do is heat it up and eat. Ham Steak makes a very quick meal if you are in a hurry, and does well if you need to feed a large number of people at one time. Great for picnics!

Directions:

1. Cut into 3/4 inch or 1 inch thick steaks.
2. Pre-heat grill on med-high to high.
3. Lay steak on grill.
4. Check the steak within 2-3 minutes by lifting the edge of steak. Look for a good sear mark.
5. Flip steak to other side.
6. Cook about 2-3 minutes and check underside for sear marks. The steak may be done before the second side sears well, so do not wait just for the sear marks. Touching the steak should still have a spring back effect. If not then it is overcooked.
7. Remove steak from grill and serve.

Safe Internal Temperature: 140-160 degrees

Tips:

* Ham steaks do very well with a brush on glaze, like honey mustard. Brush on each side just before placing on grill. Brush more if you want. The glaze will bubble and brown when done.

* It's common to cook the first side a little long. The second side may not take as long to cook, so watch close.

* All grills are different in the amount of heat produced, so watch your steak closely. If the grill is too hot the bottom will burn even though the top is still cold. If the grill is not hot enough the steak will not have good sear marks and will be dry.

Steak Tips - How to Cook a Tender Steak, Regardless of Cut

Monday, June 27, 2011

There is a clear brand of steak that is my absolute favorite in the world. I could quite de facto eat it every night of my life. But, it is expensive! Way too expensive to be purchased and eaten every night of my life. My husband and I have come up with a few cooking methods that enhance the tenderness and flavor of a steak that is on the economy end of the spectrum. We cannot afford to be buying expensive steak all the time.

The first thing we make sure to do when buying less-than-ideal cuts of steak is to ensure the size of the steak is at least one inch thick. It is also a good idea to note the color of the steak when purchasing it. The more pale and colorless a cut of meat is, the less flavor and tenderness you are going to be able to pull from it.

Cook Steak

Another good trick is to season the steak well before marinating and cooking it. We generously season our fully defrosted steaks with salt, pepper and maybe an herb or two. On both sides. Then we put the steaks in the fridge and allow them to sit for at least one hour. It is good to allow the meat to have that one-on-one time with the components that will be aiding in tenderness and flavor.

Mix up a marinade of your option and, after the meat has had suitable time with its seasonings, place the steak into a package that will allow all of the meat to be fully covered by it. One of our marinade staples includes Worcestershire sauce, garlic, salt, pepper and olive oil. No matter the marinade you use, be sure the marinating process takes at least six hours.

I should note that I am not a fan of meat tenderizers. I have found that when tenderizing is overly used, the meat will take on a dissimilar texture. A texture that I don't necessarily want swimming in my mouth. So I stay away from this method.

No matter what formula is used to cook steaks, be sure that the cooking surface is hot before placing your meat onto it. Our normal rule to accomplish a medium-cooked steak that is tender and perfectly done is this: Cook on one side for four minutes on medium to medium-high heat. Turn steak over and cook for another four to five minutes.

And like magic, your less-than-desirable cut of meat has come to be flavorful and tender!

How To Cook A Steak?

Monday, June 20, 2011

One thing that you need to remember is that you need to cook a steak that is an inch thick because anything that is thinner than that will most likely dry out and anything that is thicker than that will make it very difficult for you to actually know the doneness of the steak. Rule of thumb dictates, that no matter what kind of cooking style that you are going to use, you need sprinkle the meat with a nice dose of salt and pepper so that you can realize all the flavor of the steal. You can also rub crushed garlic on the steak. This will truly enhance the flavor of it. Also, you can use a marinade, however; if you are a true steak lover, you will rub it with salt and pepper and you ready to do.

Father's Day Steak: Tips For Cooking a Mouth-Watering Steak

Thursday, May 12, 2011

It's a trite, but often repeated saying: The way to a man's heart is through his stomach. So why, when Father's Day rolls around, do we buy endless ties and "message" T shirts? Is the way to his heart through his clothes? Not likely. It's the stomach, people, and that means good food. For many men, good food comes in the form of a great steak.

So what if you're not a steak eater, or you eat it only in restaurants and the thought of purchasing a raw slab scares you to death? Fear not. It's not that complicated, really. Even a caveman can handle this job.

Cook Steak

It's important to know your cuts of meat before planning the menu. You don't want to cook the dad in your life a tasteless, tough piece of leather. You might not notice the difference, but let's face it - he will. Since you'll likely be grilling, it's important to know the best cuts of meat for the grill.

You want to choose the most tender portions of meat for grilling. Experts generally consider these cuts of beef to be the best for grilling:

- Rib Eye

- T-Bone

- Porterhouse

- Strip steak (like New York steak)

If there is the word "loin" on the package, you're in good shape, though most grill experts agree the T-bone is the most superior cut of beef for grilling. It stays tender and juicy, and is thick enough to withstand a fair amount of time on the grill without overcooking. Stay away from top round or anything with "round" or "chuck" in the name. These will not cook well on the grill. Flank steak and London broil can also be tough.

Next, it's important to know how to choose a steak. Don't just grab the first package that looks good to you. Look for some good marbling in the steak. Yes, this is another word for fat. But we're not cooking for the dieter in the family on this special day, we're trying to give dad a good steak, remember? Those little bits of fat scattered about the steak will essentially melt while the meat is cooking, giving the meat a rich and more tender flavor.

In that same vein, don't trim the fat from your steak before cooking. It might be the diet book author in you coming out, but that thick layer of fat around your steak is what will give the steak a wonderful juicy quality and rich flavor. You can cook the steak, and then trim the fat, but cook the steak while it's still dressed in its fat clothes. It's worth it.

Do you need to buy a "name brand" steak? Experts say it's not necessary, even though branded meat is a new commodity and becoming more widely available. Nor is it necessary to choose a steak from a butcher shop or from behind the glass window in the meat department at your local grocery store. Usually the pre-packaged steaks are the same you would get from behind the glass, and since the butcher is a dying breed, you could certainly go that route if you have a neighborhood butcher, but if not, a good quality grocery store will provide what you need.

Finally, it's important to know your grades of steak.

- Prime is the top grade, and it features the most marbling and is the most tender, but most of us don't have access to this grade in mainstream grocery stores. This is often what you get in a restaurant.

- Choice is the best grade most of us can get in the grocery store. But choice does not guarantee high quality as this grade encompasses meat that can be almost as good as prime, or almost as bad as select, our next grade.

- Select beef is the most lean and least expensive beef and is the grade of beef most commonly found in your grocery store meat case. Since this is Father's Day, try to find choice and splurge a little.

If you are unsure about your ability to pick up a good steak locally, consider ordering online and having fresh, high-quality steaks delivered to your door.

At OmahaSteaks.com, you can buy a large variety pack of meat, grill some for dad, and then send him home with a few spares for another day. KansasCitySteaks.com offers prime quality steaks for a restaurant-quality dad's meal.

You Don't Need A Grill Cook Book, This Is How You Grill A Steak!

Monday, March 28, 2011

Very little things are in life better than got to the backyard, fire your grill, get some beers and enjoy a perfectly grilled, juicy T-Bone or Porterhouse steak. Of course, there are many techniques in some books as well as some more opinions from friends who suddenly became Emeril's relatives. Here, right now, you'll find a simple technique that has work for me and my friends every time in getting a perfect steak.

The first thing to do is to choose a very good cut of meat. If you make friends with a butcher, this is priceless because he can help you with this important step. You are looking for a steak of at least 1 inch thick, no more than 1.5 inches. The meat must be fresh, that is, never accepting previously frozen meat.

Cook Steak

Ok. The next step is to marinade the steak. When you marinade your steak, keep in mind that you just want to compliment or enhance the flavor of the meat and don't change it. So, we can say that you don't have to marinade the steak taking the risk to lose he flavor, but what you can do is to do it lightly just to tenderize the meat.

Here's a good recipe for marinade:

3-Cloves of Garlic, Peeled and mashed

1/4-Cup of onion (chopped)

12-ounces of dark beer

Fresh Ground Pepper (1tsp)

Cumin (1/4 tsp)

Salt (1/4 tsp)

Vegetable Oil (1/4 cup)

Dried Thyme (1/4 tsp)

Mix all the ingredients, place the steak in a container and pour the marinade on the steak, turn it over, put a lid on the container and refrigerate for 12-24 hrs.

Grilling the steak...

1. Take the steak out of the container and let it sit for about an hour to bring the steak to room temperature or close to it.

2. For gas grills; hopefully, you have a grill with two burners, so heat one part on high and the other on low. Apply carefully a good quantity of vegetable oil spray or pam to avoid sticking. Place the steak on the hot side of the grill for 1-2 minutes each side of the steak. Move it to the warm side of the grill and cook for about 9 minutes. The internal temperature should be 135F degrees.

For charcoal grills; do the same procedure, making one part of the grill the hottest possible and the other part a little less. The charcoals should turn white and you shouldn't be able to keep your hand for 2 seconds over the hottest side of the grill. This is an indication that the grill is ready.

3. Let the steak rest by placing it on a plate and covering it with foil for about 5 minutes or so. This will help in making the steak tender and juicy because if you cut the steak too early, the juices will be hot, causing them to ooze out.

Cover the steak with foil for about 5 minutes. This will make it tender and juicy.

Enjoy!

Stone Steakhouse, Staffordshire, Sexy Stone Cooked Steak!

Thursday, March 3, 2011

Dining at a restaurant for the first time, particularly if the restaurant happens to be the new kid on the block is always exciting, especially if that block is actually slate, a heady mix of intrigue, trepidation, and a healthy dose of rumour and hearsay. Thursday last week was our first visit to the all new Stone Steakhouse, the brand new dining concept at the Crown and Anchor. The restaurant has tasked itself with the ambition of 'striving to become The Best Steakhouse in Staffordshire'.

No mean feat I'm sure you'll agree since there are a number of other quality Steakhouses in Staffordshire.

Cook Steak

We arrived half an hour early so took a couple of drinks in the lounge area before taking our seats in the restaurant proper. The new decor is modern and contemporary which is unexpected if you remember the fixtures and fittings from the Crown and Anchor's pre food reincarnation. The decoration though is clean, simple, warm and inviting all at the same time. The service and mood of the restaurant is unfussy yet competent, the staff are friendly and personable, if young and slightly inexperienced. This however is made up for tenfold by their enthusiasm and willingness to meet our every need.

Choosing a Stone Steakhouse Signature Combo to share with a side of vegetables, couple of extra sauces and a glass each of the wine of the week, we modified our order slightly to come with an 8oz Buffalo Steak in place of the usual fillet of Staffordshire beef, much to the displeasure of many other diners as it was the last one!

The Argentinean Malbec, which we were told would complement our food was a great recommendation, balancing flavours of the lean Buffalo, melt in your mouth baby ribs and salty king prawns. One of the big draws of this new restaurant is the Hot Rock which is used to cook steaks at the table. Sizzling at 450 degrees a slab of slate with a juicy piece of Buffalo steak on it arrives at our table, and we're cooking the meat just to our liking right away. Even before the rest of the food has arrived the steak is cooked to perfection, this is the most fun we've had in a restaurant in a long time, and away the rock goes, back to the kitchen leaving plenty of room to manoeuvre the generous helpings of baby ribs, prawns and ham mash.

Served with a hearty portion of homemade onion rings, a good salad and our extra order of vegetables the food surpassed all expectations, the Buffalo has a delicate taste reminiscent of the best steak you've ever tasted, the meat is lean and tender, a pleasure to eat. The rack of baby ribs simply fell off the few bones, this is possibly the highlight of the evening, and smothered with a sticky hoi sin sauce the ribs are divine. The prawns are excellent, fresh and tasty; the parma ham is an especially nice touch. The ham mash is a good helping, smooth and creamy. The vegetables are bright, fresh and crisp just as they should be. The sauces are excellent too, garlic and chilli is hot and spicy in equal measure and the Jack Daniels is deep and earthy with a kick of alcohol to liven up the palate.

The whole evening is a very pleasant and enjoyable experience, excellent food, fine wine, and great service. The Stone Steakhouse is a night to remember, highly recommended.

Cook Flank Steak - What is the Best Way to Cook Flank Steak?

Monday, December 13, 2010

When trying to figure out how to cook these specific meats is really going to depend on the recipe, you are using when preparing the meal. There are thousands of recipes on each meat listed. Here are a few tips that you may find helpful when trying to figure out what to have for dinner.

When preparing a steak, I would suggest cooking it on a grill. Season your steak while allowing your grill to heat. You are going to want to grill your steak for about 20 minutes for a medium steak. However, if you choose not to grill, I would suggest that you broil your steak. Set your oven on broil and while allowing it to heat, sear your steak. This is going to add flavor and color. Place your steak in the oven and allow it to cook six to seven minutes on each side for a medium steak.

How long do you cook a medium steak, baby back ribs, or chicken? Well, cooking chicken on a grill may be a great meal for your whole family. When baking chicken in the oven typically takes about 30 minutes or longer depending on your recipe. If you decide to cook it on the grill, you are going to want to cook it on a low heat for about 45 minutes or longer. This is going to allow your chicken o cook properly without having the flame's burn the outside of your chicken.

Baby back ribs are very popular and may be the first thing that pops in your head when you hear the word barbecue. They should be cooked in a smoker or on a grill. Ribs generally take longer to cook and usually takes six to eight hours. You are going to want to pay close attention to the meat while it is cooking, this is very important when considering how long do you cook a medium steak, baby back ribs, or chicken.

The best advice I can give you on how long do you cook a medium steak, baby back ribs, or chicken is to follow a recipe and always have a meat thermometer handy. Meat thermometers will accurately tell you the temperature of your meat and the temperature alone will let you know when it is done without having to cut it open, losing most of the flavorful juices.

What is the Best Way to Marinate a Steak?

Thursday, November 4, 2010

One of the most frequently ordered meat recipes is steak. Fine dining restaurants offer their own version of steak and this is usually what the restaurant becomes known for.

The secret to cooking the best steaks is to start with the best marinade and the right marinating procedures. That way, the flavor of the marinade seeps through the meat and is tasted after the steak has been cooked and sliced.

Some chefs and food experts shared their secrets on the best way to marinate a steak. You may start applying these the next time that you cook steak at home or you can create your own recipe and steps based on this information.

* Use the proper cut

Some chefs know that the quality of the cut can affect how the marinade will incorporate its flavor into the meat. The cut of the steak should be at the right thickness, neither too thick nor too thin. If you are purchasing meats from the market, there are already those that are cut for use when cooking steak.

* Marinate the meat overnight

To make the flavor penetrate the meat, marinate the meat for several hours. If you plan to make a steak for lunch of dinner, it is best that you prepare the meat a day before you cook it. Overnight marinating is recommended. Just place the meat in a plastic container, soak it in the marinade and cover the container.

* Use a meat tenderizer

In addition to the marinade recipe, some people also add a meat tenderizer to make the meat more tender when cutting or biting. Some of the most common meat tenderizers are citrus fruits. These includes lemon juice and orange juice. The acids in the juices help soften the meat and add flavor to the steak. There are also those who use tomato to make the meat softer.

* Buy pre-mixed marinades

If you don't have much time creating and testing your own marinades, your local supermarket has a wide range of mixes that you can use to marinate your dishes. Still, the best way to use these is to soak the meat in them for long hours.

Many fine dining restaurants discovered the right way to marinate a steak and they use this to keep patrons coming back for more. But if you would like to have great homemade steaks, just learn from the experts and you can still cook the best steak for your family. Just spend some time planning and preparing for your next dinner.
